True or False…

We recommend Duette Triple Honeycomb shades over the Double Honeycomb for extra insulation against the cold.

You might be surprised to learn that we do not recommend the triple honeycomb over the double in this instance. The answer is FALSE.

Out of a rating of 5 stars, double honeycomb receives a 3 and a triple  honeycomb 3 1/2. The added cost of purchasing the triple cell shades are not a good bargain. Plus these shades are very heavy and often require extra service for string replacement. Now the triple is rated much higher or 4 1/2 stars for heat control but not cold control.

The best honeycomb on the market for insulation value is still the Duette Architella Opaque, (black-out) rated a full 5 stars or the Semi-opaque rated at 4 1/2 stars.

Architella is now on sale and so is the regular Duette honeycomb.You get a rebate of $25 off each Architelle and $20 off each Duette. There is a catch, you have to order a minimum of four blinds in any combination of the two products.

Trend Color of the Year 2012

It seems that this color was selected back in the late 90′s. Oranges and Yellows were to hit mainstream. It didn’t really take off as predicted. Problem is that merchandisers take predicted colors and infuse them in clothing, accessories, jewelry…you really have no choice but to see the color of the year in the stores…

We can help you select paint colors for your home.  Most often a main color is selected for the largest portion of area, like entry, halls, main living area, kitchen and dining area. It is fun to select a darker or contrasting color for accent walls, beams and posts, and sometimes fireplaces. Have fun with color in spare bedrooms, and the hall bath if you like.

If you like the above color here would be one way to use it successfully. Yes,  I did tone it down a bit, hhmm, alot,  and it plays very nice against the rich grayed brown

For those who love the livable naturals take a look at how gray is used to add interest to a room that is basically beige and brown.

Back in the 70′s I used to sell a lot of woven wood shades. They looked a bit different then because many of them were full of yarn. Hence the name “woven woods”. The yarns were woven through the wood reeds creating a material used most commonly for roman shades. Think golds, moss greens, and a bit of orange and the old memories will come flooding back.

This heavy look fell out of favor when the clean crisp look of mini-blinds and verticals came along. As with all things, the wovens have come back into fashion with new twist. Grasses and naturals are definitely IN right now and many of the new wovens have that ZEN look.

I never thought I would see the day when woven wood draperies would make a come back, but Hunter Douglas has brought them back into vogue. There are indeed improvements to the old look, which often involved clumsy wood pole rods and ungainly wood rings. Now the headrail is streamlined  and easy to pull. Your drapery includes a valance.

Come in and look at our new sampling for woven wood shades and draperies. The vertical drapery is especially appealing for sliding glass doors when a standard drapery or vinyl vertical just doesn’t work with your decorating finesse.

New and Old – Reupholster your best pieces

It is great fun and satisfying to take an older piece of furniture and revamp it. 

I have an older traditional chair that had been used in a model home. After taking a look at it, the old blue flamestitch fabric just did not look very stylish anymore and it would definitely clash in our home. We have a mix of modern and traditional in our home so I selected a casual texture, something you would normally see on a recliner and put it on this traditional frame. The result was an interesting mix of contemporary and classic.

Textiles Can Make A Room

Back in the 70′s draperies were the mainstay window treatment. We even put draperies in kitchen windows over the sink.  Nowadays we have many more treatments to select from. Most are more practical and  many are just plain beautiful.

When mini-blinds, roller shades and verticals became all the rage, the clean lines and easy care became the focus. Another reason this occurred was the fact that fabric prices began  to skyrocket.

Two trends are re-emerging.

Draperies are making a comeback because people are hungry for fabric in their homes. Textiles add warmth, depth of color, texture, and luxury. The best attired rooms, come with a variety of pattern, tones, and texture to add interest and comfort.

Next, roller shades still rule. Classic clean lines, no fuss care, light control. Remember the days when the spring would let loose and the shade would go thwack, thwack, thwack in the middle of the night? Remember trying to get your shade to stop at a certain level in the window? No More. Roller shades now have completely updated lift systems which eliminate the spring AND you can stop the shade at any position in the window.

Hunter Douglas has come out with a new dual shade system. One fabric is sheer in varying degrees so you can lightly shade  and the second fabric is opaque for privacy. The best of both worlds….and in one headrail, no less.

The new blind fabrics have totally new looks with texture, botanical prints and grassweaves. Awesome.

I have always carried a sampling of candles in stock. I love candles because they add a wonderful touch to a room by way of a scent or a flicker. Woodwicks have been a favorite because of their crackle and their quality scents.

In stock we have some jars and some cute tins for summer. This make a wonderful gift. Also from WickWoods we have just received 6 scents in their new product for your car. These discs attach to your vent and work great. No more dangly thingy from your rear-view mirror. Also makes a cute gift.

Clean and Care Products

We were getting so many requests for a top-quality sealant that we brought in Miracle Sealants for stone, granite and ceramic tile.

All tile jobs need to be sealed after installation. All surfaces benefit from a sealer and the grout is especially important to seal, being the most porous.

We carry 3 main products.

511 Impregnator – This is for all surfaces and it creates a moisture and stain barrier. Use this to seal and reseal granite countertops.

511 Porous Plus – This product is formulated for all stone but is good for more porous stone such as limestone, travertine, or even on masonry. Use this on honed surfaces.

511 Seal Enhancer – If you have a stone that looks best darkened, this is the product that you need. For instance slate will maintain its darker and deeper tones with this sealer.

Remember to reseal occasionly after the initial application for best protection.

Also in stock is Stone Specific Granite Cleaner and Resealer for everyday use. It is non-acidic and will not weaken grout or harm the stone in any way. Great for countertops and showers. Works equally well for marble or any high-density polished stone.

Bona is a great product for cleaning wood-flooring. It sprays on and easily wipes up with a swifter type mop. Also available is Bona for hard-surfaces which can be used for tile or laminate floors. Use this for light cleaning on any tile surface.

Capture is a powdered carpet cleaner that is so easy to use to. Spot clean with the spray then lightly dust the powder into the soiled area. Wait 30 minutes or till dry and vacuum.

Natural Elements

         

There is nothing spectacular about 2″ Aluminum Blinds. They have been around for a long time. But they do come with some pretty nice features these days.

Both the 1″ mini blind and the 2″ blind come in an option called Reveal Magnaview.  What happens is that when the blind is opened two slats stack on top of each other. So what is the big deal?

Well….instead of 1″ openings between slats now there is a full two inches. On 2″ blinds the opening is four inches….

If you have a view, this makes an incredible amount of difference.

Also on the 2″ Natural Elements you get a very nice wood valance, wood bottom rail and wood tassels.  Great upgrades for an old standby..and cool colors too!!

The number one question about most countertops is “Can I cut on it?” The answer is no, you shouldn’t. There is no countertop available that is not susceptible to scratching and chipping but quartz is incredibly strong and durable. Cambria quartz is twice as strong as granite. It is non-porous, cleans up easy, and no sealing or resealing is necessary. Quartz resists stains very well.

What I love about this quartz  line is that every color and pattern is the same price. Whether you select one of the solid colors or the marbled effects…same price. No longer do you have to debate price over preference.
