There are so many ways you can decorate your home for the holidays, from the smallest candles and accessories to large-scale trees, wreaths and statuary. Typical areas of your home to prioritize for decorating include:

• Front door and outside the house

• …Or maybe your first priority is more about cooking, eating and planning a get-together with family and friends

Start with a thorough house cleaning and put away other decorative accessories in your home, especially those on tabletops, mantles and furniture. This disciplined step will ensure you have a clean start for holiday trimmings that really pop! Once you put away extraneous accessories, you may recognize that you need more than just holiday decorating; it could be time to update carpeting, paint, furniture or window fashions too!

Plan your holiday décor for all the senses – to create a festive look, feel and smell. Think about decorations that can create new family traditions and that make you feel good. This year, consider a new entertaining concept – maybe the first party of the season held before Thanksgiving or the last party of the season a few days after New Years.

Red, green, gold, silver, blue and white are traditional holiday colors. Also think outside the box for a refreshing new look with:

Mustard Is Not Just For Sandwiches

It’s a warm, rich interior design color
that adds tang to your home environment.

Mustard as an interior design color has a very similar role as mustard on a sandwich. Just a dollop adds a lot of flavor and pizazz, but too much can spoil the sandwich! If you don’t like the mental image of a sandwich condiment in your home décor, you can also call this vibrant hue goldenrod or egg yolk.

Mustard is a rich and warm color – and just a little bit daring! It goes well with black and white or with brown and white; and is very sophisticated when used with a gray and white color palette. Other accent colors that play well with mustard include deep reds, navy blue and lighter blue tones.

Because mustard is bold and dramatic, it’s best to use it in small quantities as an accent and not as a primary design color. It’s especially effective to use mustard in the kitchen to add brightness or in a powder room to add drama. Consider these design elements to get your mustard fix:

• A piece of painted furniture or the fabric on an upholstered piece of furniture

• A picture frame or artwork featuring mustard

• Rugs and throw pillows

• An accent wall

• Window fashions and wall coverings

• Linens on the dining room table, atop the bed or in the powder room

• Lamps

• Flowers and plants with mustard blooms

• Even your front door!

Retiling a Brick Fireplace

An old brick fireplace can really date your home.

This fireplace is located in a pro-golf shop in Gig Harbor…it was time to retile this relic.

 

We selected 12 x 24’s porcelain tile for the face and 18 x 18 tile for the pad. Just a touch of mosaic was needed to emphasize the bump-out mantle.
